♔ The Duchess of Fife's Diamond Tiara

The Fife Tiara first belonged to Princess Louise of Wales, the oldest daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. When Louise married the Earl of Fife in 1887 at Buckingham Palace, she received many presents including the stunning tiara with pear-shaped diamonds hanging freely in a diamond framework, topped with more pear-shaped diamonds which alternate with round diamonds. Though it is not certain, the tiara is believed to be the work of Parisian jeweler Oscar Massin.

The tiara was a gift from the Earl of Fife, who was later made the Duke of Fife by Queen Victoria after the wedding took place. Louise and the Duke had three children. The first was a stillborn son, followed by two daughters, Alexandra and Maud. Because it was known in advance that there would be no Fife son to inherit the title, Queen Victoria made a special dispensation for inheritance in the female line. Princess Alexandra became the Duchess of Fife after her father had passed. The diamond tiara is mounted in gold and set in silver.

Caroline Bunting, Countess of Southesk, wife of David Charles Carnegie, Earl of Southesk; The Earl is the great-grandson of Princess Louise, was lent the tiara to wear on her wedding day on June 16, 1987. The Earl's sister Lady Alexandra Carnegie wore the tiara more recently for her wedding on May 29, 2001. The tiara is still assumed to be within the family.

It is now the property of HM government as it was given to them in lieu of death duties ( ie inheritance taxes) on the death of the third Duke of Fife in June 2015.
